During a recent presentation, Commander Shawn Eising of the Melbourne Police Department’s Community Services Division provided an overview of public safety activity in Downtown Melbourne and highlighted the department’s continued focus on proactive engagement and community partnerships.
Police data from the past two years shows a downward trend in calls for service throughout the downtown area. The department has also increased its proactive presence, with officers regularly engaging with businesses, identifying individuals who may need assistance and working to de-escalate situations before they have a negative impact on the community.
Public safety efforts extend beyond routine police patrols. Downtown businesses also benefit from dedicated security personnel who patrol the area and parking garage, provide a visible presence and communicate concerns directly with law enforcement. In addition, Community Resource Officers are available to conduct courtesy security assessments for businesses and provide recommendations related to cameras, landscaping and other security measures.
