INDIAN HARBOUR BEACH, Fla. – The City of Indian Harbour Beach and Indian Harbour Beach Police Department (IHBPD) are notifying residents that three license plate recognition (LPR) cameras currently located within Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) rights-of-way will be removed following a statewide directive issued by FDOT.
The affected cameras include one located along South Patrick Drive (State Road 513) and two located along State Road Highway A1A.
FDOT recently notified local law enforcement agencies that it is revoking existing approvals for LPR systems located within rights-of-way on the State Highway System. Under the directive, local agencies must remove affected devices within 30 days. FDOT also announced that it will cease approving future requests for LPR systems within its jurisdictional authority.

The directive applies statewide and is not the result of any finding of misuse by the Indian Harbour Beach Police Department.
LPR systems are law enforcement tools designed to capture license plate information from passing vehicles. They can assist investigators with identifying vehicles associated with criminal investigations, locating stolen vehicles and supporting other legitimate law enforcement purposes.
Park Security Cameras Are Not Affected
Residents may notice Flock Safety security cameras located at our City beach parks and Gleason Park. These cameras are not license plate recognition cameras and are not affected by the FDOT directive.
The park cameras are used strictly for security purposes. They are not continuously monitored, do not utilize facial recognition or artificial intelligence to identify individuals, and are generally accessed when an incident has occurred, and video footage may assist law enforcement with an investigation.
The City of Indian Harbour Beach and IHBPD remain committed to using public safety technology responsibly while respecting applicable laws, privacy considerations and directives from state agencies.
Residents with questions regarding the City's public safety systems may contact the Indian Harbour Beach Police Department at 321 773 3030.
