Grant-Valkaria incorporated in 2006, making it Brevard County's newest town. Its roots go back to fishing and pioneer settlements along the Indian River Lagoon, including Danish families who arrived in the late 1800s. The town has about five miles of lagoon frontage and stays largely rural. Landmarks include the 1916 Bensen House (the Grant Historical House) at Fisherman's Landing, the long-running Grant Seafood Festival, and the county-owned Valkaria Airport, which started as a World War II Navy airfield.
